Suzanne Grover Memorial Mural

Suzanne Elizabeth Grover (1969–2023)

Suzanne Grover was an artist, a longtime city of Washougal employee, and a co-founder of WACA.

Suzanne brought beauty to Washougal through her art, her devotion to parks, and her love of community. With creativity, faith, and kindness, she touched countless lives. Thanks to her efforts in the creation of the Washougal Arts and Culture Alliance, Suzanne’s impact continues to inspire and nurture the place she called home.

When she died in May 2023 at the age of 53, WACA president and former Washougal Mayor Molly Coston noted, “a little bit of magic went out of the world”.

“There is no better way to give a town character and presence than with art,” Grover said in 2021. “It was one of my biggest joys and passions to help fill our town with rich layers of art.”

A memorial mural was painted by local artist Travis London and is mounted on a barn at Hartwood Park, a park Grover infused with a “whimsical feel with its red-barn farm theme.”‘ The mural recreated one of Suzanne’s own paintings on the barn, capturing her love of horses and her attention to detail.

My work consists primarily of painting, mostly murals.  I create thought provoking and site specific works that attempt to weave nature’s beauty, history and power into the space.  Additionally, for the last 15 years I have witnessed the power and positive influence art has on individuals and communities, working as an art educator for Vancouver Public Schools, where I strive to share my passion for creative visual expression among my students.

I was honored to work on this project and pay tribute to another artist and neighbor that contributed much to the community. I share Suzanne’s love of painting nature and animals and am forever grateful for the work she did for the city, the local art scene and the community at large. Her beautiful horse artworks are timeless.

There is so much art to see in Washougal!

There is far more art in Washougal than you might imagine!
See what there is…and see why we are so passionate in our support of art and artists here in Washougal.

Support for WACA is made possible through a grant from the Washington State Arts Commission and the National Endowment for the Arts.
